Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and remains a major global health concern. While statins remain the cornerstone of therapy, a subset of patients require additional interventions due to inadequate response, intolerance or more stringent LDL goals. Recent advancements in understanding lipid metabolism and cardiovascular risk have led the medical community to emphasize on personalized, patient-centered approaches. This review article explores those recent advancements in lipid metabolism research that have led to adjunctive agents such as PCSK9 inhibitors, ezetimibe, bempedoic acid, and inclisiran, which have demonstrated significant efficacy in lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and improving cardiovascular outcomes.
